BA Film
Film BA(hons) 2022
Film is a collaborative art, relying on the expertise of lots of different crafts for success. This year’s graduates were just halfway through their first year when the pandemic meant that teaching went online, and the ability to collaborate in person disappeared in a haze of hand sanitizer. While this year’s projects were written and filmed without the extra demands of lockdown, they were created in a context that involved far less time working together in groups and extremely restricted access to the university’s filmmaking equipment.
Fortunately, a dearth in collaboration and hands-on experience clearly wasn’t enough to dent the creativity and imagination of these battle-hardened students, and we can see this in the fantastic range of ideas and styles that are present here:
Screenplays that involve everything from monster horror to crime thrillers, and TV scripts that look at young people finding their way in the world and mythical creatures taking part in a reality show. Short narrative films that investigate eco-destruction and mourning, alongside comedies that bring alien invaders and urban legends to life. All by way of documentaries on fire juggling and female skateboarding, and even the set-up of an organisation that supports the wellbeing of filmmakers.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the circumstances, many of the projects have a question of community and identity at their heart – but the variety of approaches and specificity of the answers is fantastic to see.
We are delighted to share some of this fantastic work at this year’s show and look forward to seeing more from these talented and hard-working creators.
Well done and congratulations to all our students!
